From: Pieter Stouten CHEMSCI1 ES DUPONT COM> Date: 24 mar 1994 Subject: Japanese Magazines. Western Shogi Quarterly. This is a respons to several mails about Shogi material and the Western Shogi Quarterly. We (in Hollland) have ordered material (boards, pieces, books, journals) directly from Japan in most cases without problems. If you want Shogi Sekai, you may order a subscription from the publication sector of Nihon Shogi Renmei, 2-39-9 Sendagaya, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Japan. If you are not confident this will work, you can contact Mr. Kiyoshi Onogi, who is NSR's contact person for the rest of the amateur Shogi world. He can be reached at +81-3-3408-6161 (phone) and +81-3-3404-7301 (fax). For weaker players (below dan-level) Shogi Journal may be more suitable than Shogi Sekai. As to western publications, personally I think that Shogi (70 bimonthly issues published between January 1976 and November 1987) is most useful. It covers many different topics, has problems, games, trivia, etc. All issues, except #1, are still available. They can also be purchased as a bound hardcover edition. They can be bought from George F. Hodges, P.O. Box 77, Bromley, Kent BR1 2WT, England, Tel. +44-81-468-7050, Fax +44-81-295-1550. For information about other "western" publications, please download SHOGI BOOKS from the archives. >Anybody out there remember the Western Shogi Quarterly? > Yes, I still must have some issues lying around. Awful lay-out and diagrams. Reasonably interesting contents. >It all came to an end when this guy sends a letter to >his audience that essentially said "I have to stop >publishing because they're after me and you all know >who _they_ are". > At the time there were lots of rumours. The man who ran the "association" or "federation" (I think his name is Reilly, but I don't really remember) seems to have claimed that George Hodges (see above) had given him an ultimatum to stop selling Shogi material. On what grounds Reilly did not say. Anyway, we Europeans thought it was all rather farfetched and did not really believe it. Later we heard that Reilly had invested a lot in Shogi material that he could not sell and went bankrupt. The people that were after him may well have been the IRS :-). It's all hearsay, but to me it seems plausible that he simply went bankrupt. Cheers, Ton Shi, your rumour monger.
