I haven't studied Hans' game and I'm a Ranging Rook player, but from memory I think the Twisting Rook strategy is as follows :- basically Black starts off playing Static Rook and manages to move his Rook to 2F, usually by swapping off the 2nd file Pawn. He then moves the Rook along the 'F' rank, often to 7F or 8F, effectively changing to Ranging Rook. This can lead to some interesting play. Of course, White can play a similar tactic. If you have access to George Hodge's Shogi Magazine then early issues (around about issue 13 I think) contain the basics. Hope this helps, Steve Lamb.
