From: Paul HOME SE> Date: 3 jun 2000 Subject: SV: Introduction Hi! I have about the same problem as mr Bain: No other players in the neighbourhood. I was shown shogi at a chess-tournament in -98 and found it interesting. However, I soon left it since I had no opportunity to play. Now and then I looked on the net and read a little just like you seemed to do. Early this year I found some places to play at. Very nervous, I went there and played my first game. That was at www.shogidojo.com, where the games are played live (several hundreds of visitors every evening european time). I soon recognized I could find suitable opponents of about my strength with help of the ratingsystem. Since then I visit it almost every night and always get opponents. I also play at shogiladder, which was recommended here and find it ok. The games take a long time and as far as I can see, most players are rather good. Nothing for a absolute beginner, I think. I also play emailshogi at Richards PBeM site (http://www.gamerz.net/pbmserv/). The games here is a lot faster and there are players of all possible strengths. I meet people who lost their Bishop in the second move and players who are very good. I think this is a good place for a beginner to start with email-shogi. The ratingsystem makes it quite easy to find appropriate opponents too. All three of the above mentioned sites are free. I know there are more sites for live games, but there are no players... I think beginners to shogi need help to find those sites, and be encouraged to join them. It takes a while before you collect enough bravery to start play, if you don't know anyone out there, I know... My name is Brannon Bain and I am from Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. I have just recently found Shogi and am very anxious to learn the game. Unfortunately, I haven't found any players in my area yet so I am just trying to pick up what I can about the game from wherever I can. I have gotten quite a bit of info from various sites on the Internet but am definitely interested in picking up more. If anyone is interested in helping me learn the game via e-mail I would be very appreciative! As for me personally, I am the Chief Instructor of the Thunder Eagle Martial Arts Academy in Jenks, Oklahoma where I teach Tsunamido Kenpo Karate, Bukendo, and Tasumaru Ryu Bujutsu. Currently, many of my students are expected to learn and play Western Chess in order to develop that part of their strategic mind. I hope, one day, to introduce Shogi to supplement, or possibly replace Western Chess in this capacity. I will soon be putting up a Shogi page on my domain (www.bujutsu.com) so if any of you would like to contribute material or have Web Sites you would like linked please let me know. Respectfully, With Honor, Brannon L. Bain Tasumaru Ryu Bujutsu Thunder Eagle Martial Arts Academy/Martial Arts America bbain galstar com
