This is the final announcement of the U.S. Shogi Championship, to be=
held May 12-13 in Washington D.C. At this time, we are expecting three =
professional players to attend, plus participants from Los Angeles, Minne=
apolis, Chicago, and of course New York and Washington.
Hours of play are 10 a.m. to about 5 p.m. each day.
On Saturday (May 12) play will be at Japan International Cultural Ce=
nter (JICC) at 1155 21st street NW, Washington, D.C. 20036 (phone 202-238=
-6902). =20
On Sunday (May 12) play will be at Gallery K, 2010 R street NW, Wash=
ington D.C. 20009 (phone 202-234-0339).
Saturday night there will be a party for the participants (and famil=
ies) at Gallery K.
Recommended hotel for the event is Quality Inn downtown (1315 16th S=
treet NW, Washington D.C. 20036). Rate is $109 plus tax for two people. =
Note: this is a change from the previously recommended hotel, as it is m=
uch closer to the playing sites. There are still rooms available if anyo=
ne wishes to switch from the other hotel. We will only be able to help w=
ith transport from the new hotel, so unless you are renting a car we reco=
mmend that you switch.
Entry fee is $60 ($50 for USSF members). This includes lunch on Sat=
urday as well as the dinner party on Sunday. Scholastic players (Element=
ary thru high school) entry fee is half. Players who can only attend one=
day may do so for half the fee. All entry fees remaining after covering=
expenses (primarily meals and trophies) will be distributed as cash priz=
es. Other special prizes may be announced, but as usual these will not b=
e known until just before tournament time.
All games are USSF rated. Time limit will be no faster than 20 minu=
tes plus 30 seconds, slower if schedule permits.
Format is knockout, but details will only be decided when we know ho=
w many players will attend. Players who have been knocked out may play =
against the visiting professionals. A team competition may be held on Sa=
turday if schedule permits, again depending on number of players. =20
